A STITCH IN TIME
Women from across London will pick up needles and thread this summer to help create a giant wall hanging which will go on display at The Gallery At Willesden Green from mid October.
A Stitch In Time, funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, will reflect traditional and new embroidery skills and provide a snapshot of the experience of women at different ages. Each group of women will undertake a panel that will reflect a different stage of their lives e.g. childhood, love, marriage, being a mother or old age.
“This is an ideal opportunity for anyone interested in stitch, sewing and embroidery to learn more about traditional techniques and sew to their heart’s content,” says Gallery Co-ordinator Lorenzo Belenguer who is managing the project with the cultural arts organisation Bridging Arts. “We’re offering sewing workshops, museum visits and demonstrations by the Royal School of Needlework – all free. If you’d like to know more, take part in the workshops or simply volunteers as an assistant, please get in touch. You don’t need to be an expert embroiderer – just keen on stitch and stitching.”
Textile artist Nisha Chadha, who has the huge task of pulling the finished hanging together, will stage workshops for those taking part. There will also be trips to museums like the V&A and Hampton Court Palace to see relevant collections and the workshops by the Royal School of Needlework will follow up on these visits.
In the meantime, there will be weekly sewing circles at The Gallery at Willesden Green from 7pm to 9pm, with refreshments, starting on Wednesday 13 August.
