WEST CORNWALL FAITH GROUPS WELCOME MIGRANT WORKERS THIS WINTER
West Cornwall faith groups will open their doors this winter in a pioneering move to build bridges and forge new links with the migrant workers who play a vital role in the local economy.
“We live alongside these workers, work the same land and often share the same faith,” said the Rev Andrew Yates, spokesman for the West Cornwall Faith Forum which is organising the initiative with bridging arts.
“Churches would like to reach out to them and offer them hospitality. It’s an important part of Christian mission to reach out to strangers in our midst and welcome them.”
To help faith leaders and congregations, the West Cornwall Faith Forum has worked with growers, the workers and local residents to produce a free pack of printed resources to encourage churches to stage an event or simply open their doors at agreed times for migrant workers to worship.
The pack contains posters, postcards and fact sheets in Polish and Lithuanian, the languages of the two main groups of migrant workers in West Cornwall, as well as English.
